The MacLean Observatory at the Redfield Campus is equipped with two domed telescopes, a 22 inch and a 14 inch Celestron SC. The 22 inch scope and its dome were donated by the MacLean family and the 14 inch scope was formerly housed at the UNR Planetarium and now occupies a dome donated by the Van Sickle Foundation. Both are computerized for accurate tracking and capable of direct and photographic observing. These donations were made to further science education at all levels, K-16 as well as for public outreach. In addition to these major instruments there are 6 "pier mounts" that support portable telescopes such that for major events 8 telescopes can be simultaneously presenting.
The Northern Nevada Astronomical Society presents public viewings every first Friday of the month, open to all visitors. Other special events may be open to the public and K-12 "class nights" can be arranged by local teachers or scout leaders. First priority is given for educational use by the University, Sierra College and TMCC, both by scheduled classes and student research.
